He traveled to China in 1952 for an international conference and met Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, the heroes of the Chinese Revolution. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the work of establishing diplomatic relations with China began under Bangabandhu’s leadership.
Diplomatic Relations:
On October 4, 2000, the Government of Bangladesh issued a postal stamp marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Bangladesh-China diplomatic relations. By this time, China had provided economic assistance totaling US$300 million to Bangladesh, and the bilateral trade had reached a value of mounting to a billion dollars. In 2002, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made an official visit to Bangladesh, and both countries declared 2005 as the “Bangladesh-China Friendship Year.”
Cultural Exchanges:
Cultural exchanges between the people of both countries have undergone significant developments. In 2019, over 37,000 Bangladeshi tourists traveled to China, and more than 5,000 Bangladeshi students studied in China. The unprecedented development of Bangladesh’s agriculture and garments sector is also due to the support of Chinese technology.
Economic Cooperation:
The economic cooperation between China and Bangladesh is evident in the bilateral trade, which has reached a value of billions of dollars. China has provided economic assistance to Bangladesh, and both countries have signed nine agreements to further promote their ties.
Role of Friendship Organizations:
Friendship organizations have played a significant role in enhancing social and cultural relationships between Bangladesh and China. These organizations have been instrumental in promoting cultural exchanges, people-to-people contacts, and mutual understanding between the two countries. They have also facilitated the exchange of ideas and experiences in various fields, including education, science, and technology.
